Why is San Miguel Mexico one of Mexico's top rated destinations year after year?

It is a State that shines in the heart of Mexico. Perhaps it is because San Miguel de Allende's weather is nearly perfect year round. Perhaps it is because San Miguel de Allende's picturesque cobblestones streets and colonial architecture have inspired generations of artists.

San Miguel de Allende also offers visitors and residents a vibrant and lively community of artists, musicians and writers and a delightful mix of Mexican folk traditions, fiestas and religious celebrations. Shopping in San Miguel de Allende is a shop-a-holic's dream - plenty of Mexican handicrafts, boutiques, art galleries, and furniture and home decor to choose from. Thousands of people come to San Miguel de Allende every year to learn Spanish, study art, or take Mexican cooking classes.

Guanajuato is home to one of the country's well-known religious shrines, Cristo Rey del Cubilete. Every January, hundreds and thousands of pilgrims arrive at the city on horseback to celebrate The Epiphany at the shrine. The city also co-hosts Expresión en Corto International Film Festival with nearby San Miguel de Allende . The largest festival of its kind in Mexico, the festival screens some 400 films during the last week of July, all free of charge to the public.

But San Miguel de Allende isn't just for tourists. The foreign community of San Miguel consists of thousands of people from all over the world who have chosen to make this delightful and historic town in Central Mexico their home.

October brings Festival Internacional Cervantino, an art event, to the city. During the Medieval Festival, which is held twice each year, in March and December, townsfolk decorate their city in Spanish village style, dress in era-appropriate fashion and play instruments from that time.

It has a large pedestrian zone, which makes it pleasant to walk around downtown, according to Calzada. "Here in Guanajuato you have to walk, you have to push yourself to speak some Spanish, and people will always be open to listen, understand, and help you find your way."

Many people say that San Miguel is a bit like a Mexican Disneyland for foreign (mainly American) retirees. Indeed, this is a stunning and neat city, with colonial architecture, enchanting cobblestone streets and striking light. Regular festivals, fireworks and parades dominate the local scene.

The town’s cosmopolitan panache is reflected in its excellent restaurants and high-class, colonial-style accommodation options. Numerous galleries are stocked with some of the best of Mexican artesanías and cultural activities are on tap for residents and visitors. There are few sights: as a Mexican-declared national monument, San Miguel is the sight.
